My 10 year old has autism. He is at a 3rd grade level although he's considered a 5th grader. Lately, he's been coming home crying about how when he gets old, he doesn't want to die and how god will save him. We are a Buddhist home as that is my husband's faith. I'm atheist.
I just found out from the school that the children of Mormon parents are told to come to our PUBLIC school and preach their religion to other kids at recess. The school says they can't do anything. I call BS!
My son has enough issues with writing - he doesn't need to worry about anything else such as an afterlife. He won't have much of a current life if he fails in getting an education. AZ already has the lowest money per student spent in all 50 states and the AZ government is trying to avoid paying the $1B debt to the schools that they are owed. It's pathetic we live in a state where seniors are considered the "future" and they have expectations that future minimum wage workers will support all these baby boomers on social security. The numbers don't compute. I guess they all failed at math and now they want my children to do the same.
Why do these Mormons get a free pass? If a Muslim child went around the playground preaching about Allah and infidels are to be disposed of, how many of these parents would scream bloody murder? That's the problem with Abraham based religions - they are full of hypocrisy. Religion has killed more people on this planet than any other disease, natural disaster, or famine since the beginning of recorded time. I answer my son's religious questions with objectivity and describe how certain people believe. HE'S AUTISTIC. Adding a level of unanswerable questions to his confusion will only result in a more difficult time in focusing on what he needs to at this moment.
Before the book thumpers start ranting, understand I don't care what you do at home or on Sunday or in the park. It's when you threaten my child's future in a place where he has a constitutional right for it to be secular so he can focus on the task at hand that infuriates me. Who do you think you are?
